Latin Name: Rosa damascena
Part of Plant: Flower
Country of Origin: Bulgaria
Method of Production: Steam Distillation
Rosa damascena, also known as Autumn Rose and more commonly Damask Rose, is a hybrid plant that is a member of the Rosaceae botanical family. The steam distilled essential oil from this plant is commonly referred to as Rose Otto. It is one of the most expensive essential oils produced due to all the factors that come into play for its production. According to Tony Burfield, “...an often quoted figure is that 4000 pounds (2 tons) of flowers produce 1 pound of otto (i.e., yield is 0.025%), the flowers are handpicked in the early mornings between May and June…” “It takes some 800 individuals to gather this amount of flowers. Mature buds open at 5:00 a.m. in the morning, and the oil content is maximal over the next 2-4 hours.”
Rose essential oil has a strong floral aroma that blends well with floral, citrus, and wood oils, and a little bit goes a long way in blends and diluted products. It is popular in perfume blends, especially date night blends that include oils like Jasmine or Damiana. It may assist with the appearance of skin when properly diluted and applied topically. Rose is also popular with ladies used either alone or blended with oils like Geranium, Bergamot, Neroli, or Clary Sage for a relaxing diffuser blend.
